Capitol Trailways

Capitol Bus Company was founded in 1936 by the brothers, John and Joe Maguire originally created to carry workers from the Pottsville area in Northeastern Pennsylvania to jobs in Harrisburg, the state Capital. The bus company quickly found other work for it's stretch Chevrolets.

In the prewar years, the company extended it's service to passengers going north to Scranton in addition to its southern runs to Harrisburg. As Army recruits arrived at the Harrisburg train station for training at nearby Fort Indiantown Gap, the early 40's saw the company rapidly enlarge to meet the demand for troop transportation. Company archives show photos of Capitol "buses" as tractor/trailer rigs with benches and little comfort for the 15-mile trip. Soldiers leaving the Gap for duty or for home went into the Capitol ticket office and waited for the Capitol bus to take them back to the train station.

In the 1950s, Capitol Bus Company became one of the early members of the National Trailways Bus System and filed for the trade name; Capitol Trailways of Pennsylvania. It is a continuing member of that System and trades under the same name today.

Capitol Trailways remained under the ownership of the Maguire family. Dick Maguire was widely recognized as a leader of the bus industry as that industry evolved during the 60's and 70's. The company played a significant role in the late 70's as it joined with other bus companies and the American Bus Association in preparation for the impact deregulation would have on the interstate transportation of passengers.

The Maguire family sold the company to three of its Executives in 1988.

The Company currently operates 43 coaches in a combination of regularly scheduled line run service, charter service, regularly scheduled Atlantic City service and preformed group tours. The company has proven itself to be a reliable and effective source of transportation to large groups, International inbound tour operators and Fortune 500 Companies.

The National Trailways Bus System is open to membership for line run, charter and suppliers. Information is available at their web site: http://trailways.org.
